PSN CEO Max Skala took the stage at this year’s Transformation Summit, held on 23–24 September at Prague’s O2 universum. In his talk, he shared the story of PSN’s transformation and his experience of leading a family business, which he took over at the age of 25. PSN was a strategic partner of this year’s event.
His talk, Leading Real Change: A CEO’s Dos and Don’ts of Company Transformation, traced PSN’s journey from a company founded in the early 1990s to the business it is today, with a significantly larger portfolio, team and range of projects.
Max focused particularly on the years following his appointment as CEO. At the time, PSN was a healthy, successful company built around experienced people and a strong ability to make sound business decisions. As its portfolio, number of projects and team continued to grow, however, it became clear that the management approach that had worked for a smaller company was no longer enough. What followed was a gradual professionalisation of the company’s management, with new processes and systems being introduced along the way. The transformation was not without its missteps. Max shared, among other things, PSN’s first experience with implementing a CRM system and the lessons learned from finding the right balance: systems should make people’s work easier and serve a clear purpose rather than become an end in themselves.
One of the key lessons from this journey has been the importance of keeping the business itself in focus while professionalising the way a company operates. This was also the central message of Max’s conclusion: it is not a question of choosing between entrepreneurial instinct and systems. A growing company needs both.
