Avant Grid has won the open art competition organised by Penta Real Estate and PSN for a public artwork at the Vinohradská 8 development. Selected from 53 entries, their proposal, Palimpsest, impressed the expert jury with its thoughtful engagement with the site’s memory, striking artistic form and dialogue with the area’s future character.
The winning artwork, Palimpsest (from the Greek for “scraped clean again”), draws inspiration from the original fountain featuring a brass sphere on a chain, designed by architect Ivo Loos. The fountain was a significant artistic feature of the former Transgas complex. The artists have reinterpreted this motif as a monumental suspended sphere, symbolising the city’s changing nature, its layers of stories and the relationship between past and present. The name Palimpsest refers to the way traces of earlier layers remain even after new ones have been added.
The open art competition, organised by Penta Real Estate and PSN, attracted entries from 53 artists and artist collectives. An expert jury selected eight finalists, who developed their proposals further and presented them in person. The winning proposal, Palimpsest, was created by Avant Grid, whose members are Epos 257 (Štěpán Soukup), Sausan Haj Abdo, Jan Hladil and Kajetán Adler Jablonský.
The artwork will be situated between the future Vinohradská 8 office building and the existing building at Vinohradská 10. It is intended to serve as a distinctive landmark while drawing attention to a new passage through the block, connecting Vinohradská, Římská and Rubešova streets.
Designed by Jakub Cigler Architekti, the Vinohradská 8 development will create a new city block with apartments, premium offices, shops and dining venues. It will also introduce new public space, opening up an area that is currently difficult to walk through. The artwork will become an integral part of this space and help shape the site’s identity.
